Bridgehaven: The hybrid route through the soft market cycle

Industry News

After several years of tightening conditions, many parts of the commercial and specialty insurance market are softening, with competition returning, capacity easing and downward pricing pressure re-emerging. But what this means in practice however, varies widely across the market, depending on where firms sit in the value chain and how flexible their operating models are.

For reinsurers, softer market conditions are exposing the limits of traditional growth strategies. In mature markets like US property, volumes have already come under pressure as primary insurers retain more risk on their own balance sheets, underlining the need to look beyond established channels. Rather than competing more aggressively for the same business at lower margins, reinsurers are increasingly focused on diversification and finding new sources of risk and new distribution channels that allow them to grow without simply chasing the cycle downwards.

MGAs meanwhile, have traditionally thrived in hard market conditions, particularly in specialist and niche lines where underwriting expertise is at a premium. But softer markets are a more challenging environment for some models as structural vulnerabilities are exposed, particularly for mono-line MGAs. The issue is less about the ability to trade through softer conditions, and more about the instability of capacity and appetite that often accompanies cyclical change. Shifts in carrier strategy within a single renewal cycle can create uncertainty around long-term support and make it harder for MGAs to plan with confidence or invest for the long term.

Underwriting expertise and risk capital tend to drift in and out of alignment as market conditions change. In hard markets, the relationship is often easier to sustain while in softer markets that alignment is tested. Hybrid insurers have emerged as an attempt to address this structural gap by providing a regulated framework that brings MGA underwriting capability and reinsurance capital into closer, more durable alignment. The aim is not to smooth away market cycles, but to create a more resilient operating model through them.

Creating a closer and more durable alignment

That resilience is tested most visibly in soft markets. Not all classes move in the same direction, and as pricing starts to diverge, portfolio balance and pricing discipline matter more, not less. Knowing when to walk away becomes just as important as knowing when to grow, and in that context, hybrid models that combine access to reinsurance capacity with underwriting oversight offer a way of maintaining discipline when it can be tempting to chase volume.

Hybrid insurers do not change market cycles, or remove the need for pricing discipline and clear walk-away points. Their value lies in how they organise the relationship between underwriting expertise and risk capital at a time when that relationship is under strain. By bringing MGAs and reinsurers into closer, more durable alignment, hybrid models aim to reduce some of the friction that softer conditions tend to expose.

The hybrid model offers a way of easing that cyclical bind by tightening the relationship between underwriting expertise and risk capital. It does not erase the cycle, but it may help market participants navigate this phase of it with greater consistency than has often been possible in the past.
