Cowbell – Shaping the Future of Cyber Insurance

Thought Leadership

7th March 2025

Cowbell, an innovative player in the field of cyber insurance, has been on a mission to redefine how businesses protect themselves against cyber risks. Since its inception, Cowbell has pioneered continuous risk assessment and adaptive underwriting, offering tailored cyber insurance solutions in an ever-evolving environment. In 2023, the company expanded its presence to the UK and recently became a member of the Managing General Agents’ Association.

The Importance of Community in the MGA Sector:

For Cowbell, being part of the MGAA is a key pillar of its business strategy. Simon Fraser, Senior Director of Broker Success at Cowbell UK, emphasises the importance of community within the MGA space and how the Association plays a key part in fostering a collaborative environment among its members. Through events like the Broker Exchange, Cowbell has been able to connect with business partners, prospects, and other MGAs, enabling it to share insights, best practices, and collectively navigate industry challenges.

Simon adds: “It is important for us to be a part of that network. The MGAA is creating a space for us to engage with like-minded professionals, collaborate, and strengthen our reputation within the MGA and broker community.”

The Advantages of Specialisation in the MGA Market:

Simon highlights that one of the biggest advantages of MGAs, especially those like Cowbell, is their ability to specialise in niche areas. While composite insurers juggle multiple lines of business, MGAs like Cowbell are able to dedicate their focus to a specific industry or sector – in this case, cyber and technology insurance.

He explains: “Composite insurers often face the challenge of balancing multiple areas, which can dilute their focus. At Cowbell, we have the ability to deeply understand and specialise in cyber insurance. This allows us to not only provide expert underwriting but also offer the necessary claims expertise and an understanding of the unique challenges our clients face.”

MGAA Resources and Initiatives:

Cowbell has found significant value in the resources and initiatives offered by the MGAA. Simon references the Broker Exchange as one of its most impactful platforms, allowing Cowbell to connect with industry peers, partners, and prospects. But he feels the value goes beyond networking – that it is also about ongoing education.

As someone who transitioned from Cowbell’s US branch to its UK arm, Simon admits that understanding the nuances of the UK market was a steep personal learning curve. The MGAA’s educational modules have been instrumental in helping him navigate these differences. “Without the MGAA’s resources, it would have been a challenge to adapt to the UK market,” Simon admits.

This adaptability has allowed both Simon, and Cowbell, to fine-tune its offering and cater to the unique needs of the UK market, giving the company an edge in understanding both local regulations and market demands in a dynamic market.

Emerging Trends Shaping the MGA Market:

Simon sees several key trends emerging in the MGA space, particularly in the realm of cyber insurance. The growing prevalence of regulation in the UK, especially around cyber threats like ransomware, is one major trend. As debates around whether to pay or not to pay for ransomware attacks gain attention, he believes the MGA community is playing a crucial role in providing expert insights to guide both businesses and lawmakers.

Furthermore, Simon notes the rapid advancement of technology and its implications for the insurance industry. “Two years ago, we weren’t talking about generative AI, but now we are. The risks associated with AI, especially in relation to data protection laws, are crucial discussions for MGAs to have. The MGAA helps to bring these voices together, providing a platform for consultation and shared expertise.”

Advice for Businesses Considering Joining the MGAA:

Simon’s advice to businesses considering joining the MGAA is simple: Think about whether you want to be a voice on your own or part of a collective voice. The MGA market is highly competitive, but being part of a community that works together for the greater good can provide significant value.

“Community can only benefit us when it comes to building networks and protecting our profession. At the end of the day, we all compete, but we are also all working towards common goals. If you want to have a voice and make a meaningful impact, being part of the MGAA is invaluable,” he concludes.
