Empowering the Next Generation of Insurance: The Impact of Mentoring

Blog Next Gen

15th April 2024

Launched last March, MGAA NextGen initiated its mentoring program and has just announced its second cohort. In the fast-paced realm of insurance, supporting new talent isn’t just beneficial – it’s essential for long-term success. That’s why organisations like the Managing General Agents’ Association (MGAA), through its NextGen initiative, are turning to mentorship as a key strategy to empower the next generation of insurance professionals.

Picture this: a young Underwriter feeling overwhelmed by the complexities of the job. They’re grappling with intricate policies and uncertain about their next steps. But they’re not alone. Enter their mentor – a seasoned industry veteran who’s been in their shoes before. Through candid conversations and practical advice, the mentor provides invaluable support, helping the underwriter navigate challenges and build confidence along the way.

But mentorship isn’t just about solving day-to-day problems; it’s about fostering growth and forging connections that last a lifetime. Mentors serve as guides, offering insights, encouragement, and a helping hand to those who are just starting out. They share their experiences, offer perspective, and provide a roadmap for success in an ever-changing industry.

Mentorship also provides a safe space for the mentee to ask questions without fear of judgment or performance implications. It’s a place where curiosity is encouraged, mistakes are seen as learning opportunities, and growth is celebrated.

By prioritising mentorship, organisations like MGAA are investing in the future of insurance while also building a sense of community within the industry. Through mentorship programs, professionals from different backgrounds come together to share knowledge, exchange ideas, and support one another on their professional journeys. It’s a collaborative environment where everyone has something to learn and something to teach.

For emerging talent, the benefits of mentorship are clear: access to guidance, support, and opportunities for growth that can’t be found anywhere else. Mentees gain valuable insights into the industry, develop new skills, and build confidence in their abilities – all with the help of a trusted mentor by their side.

But mentorship isn’t just a one-way street; mentors also benefit from the experience. They gain fresh perspectives, hone their leadership skills, and find fulfilment in helping others succeed. It’s a rewarding experience that pays dividends for both parties involved.

As mentorship programs continue to gain traction in the insurance industry, the future looks bright. With a new generation of leaders and specialists emerging, innovation flourishing, and collaboration thriving, the stage is set for continued success in the world of insurance – one guided by the power of mentorship.

Jessica Farrow | Senior Client Underwriter | Swiss Re

‘” Mentoring is something I find to be hugely valuable. My mentor has helped me make a move to underwriting by providing the right contacts to help me first get a rotation with an underwriting team. My mentorship allowed me to learn about her specific career journey and provided a forum to discuss specific scenarios as well as receive general advice and guidance.

It’s important to have clear goals and objectives of things you want to gain from the experience to ensure you get the most out of it. I also think it’s nice to have someone in a position you can aspire to. Mentors also don’t have to be “formal” – I have plenty of informal mentors that I get great value from including using them as a soundboard and just giving advice. The most important thing to ensure is that there is trust in the relationship – as long as you have that, you can have a fruitful exchange!”

I’m also passionate about making insurance more accessible, inclusive, and ready for the future. I started my career at an insurer, moved on to a tech-driven MGA, and now I’m completing the cycle at a brokerage—giving me a well-rounded view of the market. With over a decade of experience, I focus on digital transformation, agile delivery, and improving how Commercial Insurance is traded.
