25 Years of Expertise, Innovation and Industry Leadership

Innovation Group’s European Plant Science Laboratory (EPSL) celebrates 25 years of delivering specialist root investigation and arboricultural laboratory services, marking a significant milestone in its history as one of the UK’s most experienced root identification laboratories.

Since opening its dedicated facility in Bangor on 11th September 2001, the laboratory has supported thousands of investigations for engineers, insurers, local authorities, housing providers, utility companies and property owners across the UK. Through scientific analysis, practical investigation and evidence-based advice, the team has helped improve understanding of the relationship between trees, buildings and the built environment.

The origins of the laboratory stretch back to the late 1980s, when Dr Pat Denne established a root identification laboratory within the Forestry Department at Bangor University. As demand for specialist root identification services increased, Dr Sian Turner and Mark Mitchell joined the team, helping to develop the expertise and capabilities that would later form the foundation of EPSL’s dedicated Roots Laboratory.

Over the past quarter of a century, the laboratory has built an extensive body of knowledge through thousands of investigations, contributing valuable insights into root systems, tree behaviour and vegetation-related property issues. This experience has played an important role in supporting informed decision-making in cases involving subsidence, infrastructure conflicts and tree-related damage.

Research and innovation have remained central to the laboratory’s development throughout its history. Among its notable achievements is the advancement of techniques for distinguishing between poplar and willow roots, an area traditionally regarded as particularly challenging within the arboricultural sector. This work has helped improve the accuracy of investigations and contributed to the wider understanding of species commonly associated with subsidence claims.

As industry requirements have evolved, the laboratory has continued to invest in new technologies, investigation methodologies and specialist expertise. What began as a dedicated root identification service has expanded into a broader portfolio of arboricultural and scientific services designed to meet the changing needs of clients nationwide.

Reflecting on the anniversary, the laboratory recognises the contribution of the many individuals who have helped shape its success over the last 25 years. From its founding pioneers, including Dr Pat Denne, Dr Sian Turner, Mark Mitchell and Dr Rory Shaw, the organisation has remained committed to delivering scientific excellence and high standards of customer service.

Looking ahead, EPSL remains focused on combining decades of experience with continued investment in research, people and technology to support clients and contribute to the future development of the arboricultural sector.

As the laboratory celebrates this milestone, Innovation Group extends its thanks to clients, colleagues, partners and industry stakeholders who have supported its journey over the past 25 years.

Synectics Solutions: Perfect fakes, imperfect behaviour – the real weakness in AI fraud

Insurance fraudsters are swapping isolated forgeries for entirely fabricated realities. Armed with AI – and in efforts to bypass enhanced screening tools that have become popular with insurers – they’re blending in with normal customer activity. So much so, that record numbers of synthetic identities are being used repeatedly, and fake documents are rising in areas of formerly low concern.
