Root: 2026 Outlook – Why API-Driven Architecture Is the Key to Unlocking AI for MGAs
9th January 2026
By Cameron Parsons, Head of Business Development, Root
A live poll taken during Root’s recent MGAA Market Briefing How API-Driven Insurance Models are Transforming Distribution indicated a striking truth about the MGA market: half of MGAs are still at the very beginning of their digital and API transformation journey. Forty per cent of leaders said they were “just getting started”, another 10% were “actively exploring solutions”, while only 20% reported being fully API-enabled. In a market where speed, partner connectivity and operational efficiency increasingly determine competitive advantage, this widening gap matters.
And it matters even more as the conversation shifts beyond digitisation alone. AI is already reshaping underwriting, claims and customer experiences, but AI cannot operate in a vacuum. Its power depends entirely on the quality, accuracy and accessibility of underlying data flows. That is why, before AI can truly transform insurance, API-first infrastructure must come first.
APIs: The Foundation for an AI-Enabled Future
As our CEO, Charlotte Koep, noted during the Market Briefing session, APIs have transformed every major digital industry, from banking to retail. Insurance, with its complex chain of carriers, MGAs, brokers, TPAs and distribution partners, is arguably the sector that needs them the most.
Legacy insurance experiences are still characterised by fragmented systems, manual workarounds and disjointed customer journeys. APIs, by contrast, act as the interconnected building blocks that bind an MGA’s ecosystem together, enabling real-time data exchange, automated workflows and a single connected engine that powers everything from rating to policy admin to claims.
This connectivity is what ultimately enables AI to deliver real value. GenAI models require rich, consistent data. Automated triage depends on reliable event-driven triggers. Intelligent pricing needs access to accurate behavioural and usage insights. None of this is possible without API-enabled interoperability.
Solving the Pain Points That Slow MGAs Down
From conversations across the UK market, we regularly hear that MGAs have accepted slow onboarding, expensive product changes and patchy data as “normal”. Yet from a technology perspective, many of these challenges are surprisingly easy to solve, as long as the right infrastructure is in place.
With modular, API-driven connectivity, MGAs can reduce product launch times from the traditional 12–18 months to just weeks. They can eliminate double-keying, remove reconciliation headaches and onboard distribution partners with a fraction of the historic cost and complexity. That efficiency is vital as MGAs scale and as customer expectations accelerate.
Most importantly, APIs unlock the new distribution opportunities that MGAs increasingly rely on, embedded partnerships, multi-brand affinity products, and digital journeys that were simply impossible even five years ago.
AI Is Accelerating, But MGAs Need the Right Foundations
The rise of AI is generating huge excitement, but it risks overshadowing an uncomfortable reality: AI is only as strong as the systems it plugs into. For MGAs still early in their transformation curve, the priority shouldn’t be chasing the latest AI trend. It should be establishing the governance, data discipline and API-first architecture that allow AI to be deployed safely, meaningfully and at scale.
Start small. Build one product with modern tooling. Ensure strong data hygiene from day one. And, crucially, view technology partners not as vendors but as long-term collaborators. The most successful outcomes come when “great MGA teams work alongside great technology”.
A Market Ready for Change
The MGAA poll reflects what we see every day: the market is ready for this shift. Pressure to grow profitably, operate efficiently and differentiate in a crowded landscape is intensifying. And for MGAs looking ahead to 2026, the message is clear: AI will transform insurance, but only for those with the API-first foundations to support it.

Intersys: A New Year’s Resolution for MGAs – Bring Shadow AI Under Governance Control
By Matthew Geyman, Managing Director, Intersys MGAs enter 2026 in an environment defined by contradictory forces: the promise of AI-enabled efficiency, and the escalating operational, regulatory and cyber risks that accompany it. Inari: AI Build vs. Buy – Smarter Underwriting Software Decisions for MGAs
AI has moved quickly from buzzword to boardroom priority across the insurance market. For MGAs, the real question is no longer whether to adopt AI, but where it genuinely adds real value to underwriting, and who should realistically build and maintain those capabilities, given the cost, complexity, and ongoing effort required. In practice, since AI...
